The Shoulder In A Delicate Region

The rotator cuff is composed of muscles and tendons that keep the head of your humerus, the bone inside your upper arm, anchored in the shoulder socket. Each of the following muscles plays a critical role:

  • Supraspinatus--In addition to helping lift the arm, the supraspinatus holds the humerus in place and keeps the upper arm stable.

  • Infraspinatus--The infraspinatus is the primary muscle responsible for rotating and extending the shoulder.

  • Teres Minor--The teres minor is the smallest muscle in the rotator cuff. Its primary function is the rotation of the arm away from the body.

  • Subscapularis--The subscapularis binds the upper arm bone to the shoulder blade and aids in the rotation, extension, and lowering of the arm.

Can a Rotator Cuff Tear Be Fixed Non-surgically?

Many rotator cuff tears can be treated nonsurgically. Anti-inflammatory medication, steroid injections, and physical therapy can all prove beneficial. Such treatments aim to relieve pain and restore strength to the injured shoulder.

Though most muscle tears cannot heal on their own. Sufficient function for day-to-day injuries can be achieved without surgery. If full range of motion is necessary for work or sports, however, surgery is typically recommended.

What Surgical Options Are Available For Rotator Cuff Injuries?

The surgical techniques used to repair a muscle tear depends on the nature of the injury. A partial tear may only require a smoothing, trimming procedure known as a debridement. A full tear across a tendon can be repaired side to side. A tear origination from the tendon’s insertion on the humerus, the most common injury, is repaired directly to the bone. Typically, three techniques are used to repair rotator cuffs surgically: traditional open repair, mini-open repair, and arthroscopic repair.
